Iraq Is Removed From List of States Sponsoring Terror
Fact of the Day
The United States has formally removed Iraq from its list of state sponsors of terror. The United States ended terror-related sanctions on Iraq in March 2003, but the country could not officially be removed from the list until a new Iraqi government assumed authority. Now that Iraq has an interim government that does not support acts of international terrorism and has given assurances that it will not support such acts in the future, the designation has been removed. This action recognizes the dramatic change that a new, representative government has brought to Iraq.
