U.S. Reduces Landmine Threat
Fact of the Day
The United States is reducing the threat of landmines around the world. The United States funds more mine-removal jobs than any other country and has invested $900 million in the cause since 1993. This funding is at work in 26 countries and supports mine detection and clearance as well as mine-risk education. Landmines kill or maim thousands of people each year and drain resources away from economic recovery in impoverished areas, but their threat has already begun to decline.
