Iraqi Students Encourage Free Thought
Iraq Fact of the Day

Iraqis are increasingly engaging in public discussions and debates. Students at the eight schools comprising the University of Baghdad, and universities in Mustansaria, Basrah, Mosul and Najaf recently organized poster and leaflet campaigns. Posters asked: "Why do universities exist?" Students gathered in small groups to discuss the subject. Several posters were so compelling that students simply wrote their thoughts directly on the posters. Student debate is important in any free society and its development in Iraq is another sign of ways that democracy is taking root.
