Global Message
From remarks by Secretary of State Powell at the International Political Directors Meeting, 5/20/04
Saddam Hussein is in jail where he belongs and his regime has been crushed. There are still elements of that regime that try to fight, and they will be defeated.
Saddam's remnants have to be defeated to ensure that we do for 25 million Iraqi people what we promised them we would do.
The coalition should be proud of what it has done so far, but the work ahead is still difficult. The security environment is still challenging.
We can prevail as long as we maintain the kind of solidarity that we have shown over the last year.
The coalition must leave a legacy which points away from tyranny and toward freedom, and away from terror and toward legitimate government under the rule of law.
