White House Web Site Unveils Presidents Day: United in Service
The White House web site for children, whitehousekids.gov, unveiled a new feature called Presidents Day: United in Service. The site includes web-exclusive videos, new presidential biographies developed with the help of area fifth-graders, coloring pages by a White House artist and resources on volunteer service, history and civics for students, parents and teachers.
Web Exclusive Videos on Service
Members of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation discuss the importance of volunteer service. The participants include:
- Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin
- Arizona Diamondback Luis Gonzalez
- Former Washington Redskin Darrell Green
Presidential Biographies
- Fifth-graders from Abingdon Elementary School in Arlington, Virginia, helped to develop these biographies by gathering facts and coloring drawings for each president.
- The biographies highlight important facts, such as ways each president served their nation, and colorful facts, such as how old they would be if living today and a favorite hobby or sport.
- The biographies also include facts about Life in America during each presidential term, noting how the president would have traveled and communicated.
Resources for Students, Parents and Teachers
- The site includes downloadable worksheets, historical facts and coloring-book drawings of each president.
- Links to Bush Administration and government resources on history, civics and service are also available.
