Statement by the Press Secretary
Senator Danforth's Report to the President on Sudan

The Outlook for Peace in the Sudan

On September 6, 2001, the President named Senator John Danforth as his Envoy for Peace in Sudan. On April 26, 2002, Senator Danforth submitted his report to the President. The report finds that despite the many obstacles, a peace settlement in Sudan is possible in the near term. The report recommends that the United States continue to serve as an intermediary between the parties, pursuing peace with and through the ongoing regional peace initiative.

The President is grateful for the effort and dedication of Senator Danforth in his mission of peace.

The full text of the report is available on the White House web site.
