President Bush to Nominate Randt to be Ambassador of the United States to the People's Republic of China

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate Clark T. Randt, Jr. to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the People's Republic of China.

"Sandy Randt has spent most of his professional career working with China in the Foreign Service and in business matters. His expertise in the Chinese language and culture, international business, and foreign affairs, will help us strengthen our important relationship with China as he serves as our next U.S. Ambassador," said the President.

Clark (Sandy) Randt has been involved in U.S. and Chinese relations both from the government and private sector perspectives for over 25 years.  He served in Taipei, Taiwan, with the United States Air Force Security Service from 1968 to 1972.  During his second year of law school he participated in an East Asia Legal Studies Travelling Fellowship to China where he sat on the National Council for United States-China Trade as the China Representative.  While there he established and managed the Canton Trade Fair Office.

From 1975 to 1982, Randt was an Associate in New York and then Tokyo with the law firm of Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy.  The following two years he served as the First Secretary and Commercial Attache at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing where he was the lead negotiator on compliance issues under the U.S.-China Bilateral Trade Agreement.  During that time he was awarded a Distinguished Service Silver Medal and Foreign Service Sustained Superior Service Award.  Mr. Randt served as a Partner Resident in the Hong Kong office with Heller, Ehrman, White & McAuliffe from 1985 to 1987 and then became the Partner resident in Hong Kong and Head of the China Practice Group for Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher until 1993.  He is presently a Partner resident and Head of the China Practice Group for Shearman & Sterling.

Mr. Randt is a resident of Connecticut, and is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Michigan Law School.
