Congress purchases a full-length portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart for $800--a significant sum at that time--in preparation for John Adams' move into the newly-constructed home at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Dolley Madison later saves the painting from destruction during the War of 1812 when the White House was set on fire by the British military.
