Assistant Secretary of the Treasury (Economic Policy)

Phillip L. Swagel was sworn in as Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy on December 11, 2006. He advises the Secretary on all aspects of economic policy, including current and prospective macroeconomic developments and the development and analysis of the Administration’s economic initiatives. Mr. Swagel was a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute from March 2005 through October 2006, where he conducted research on domestic and international economic issues. He served as chief of staff at the White House Council of Economic Advisers from July 2002 to February 2005, and was a senior economist at the Council from August 2000 to July 2001. Mr. Swagel was also previously an economist at the Federal Reserve Board and the International Monetary Fund, and has taught courses on macroeconomics and international economics at Northwestern University and the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. He has published articles in academic journals and the mainstream press on topics including economic growth, international trade, and international finance. Mr. Swagel graduated from Princeton University with an AB in economics, and received his PhD in economics from Harvard University. He lives in Maryland with his wife and three children.
