Director Nussle on Passge of H.R. 2642

Washington, DC — Today, OMB Director Jim Nussle issued the following statement on Senate passage of H.R. 2642, the Supplemental Appropriations Bill of 2008.

“It's disappointing and irresponsible that Congress has failed to complete action on a bill that funds our troops prior to Memorial Day. Our men and women in uniform deserve better than having essential war time resources held hostage to billions in unrelated spending.”

“The President has made clear that he will veto a bill that restricts our commanders in the field and exceeds his responsible spending levels.  The Senate reaffirmed today that attempts to tie the hands of our military commanders lack bi-partisan support and over the past two weeks Congress has also demonstrated that we have the votes to sustain a veto on tens of billions of dollars in unrelated spending attached to this troop funding bill.”

“There’s a long way to go in this process, and now that Congress’ cynical strategy has failed, it is time for the Congress to send a bill to the President that he can sign.”
