Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven Law Appointed Chair of President’s E-Government Subcommittee
Washington, DC - Deputy Secretary of Labor Steven J. Law has been appointed chairman of the President’s Management Council Subcommittee on E-Government.
Law will replace Samuel Bodman, former deputy secretary of the Department of Treasury, who was confirmed by the Senate earlier this week as Secretary of Energy.
"Making government more accessible to customers has been a top priority of the President’s E-Government Strategy," said Deputy Secretary Law. "We will continue to build and brand portals for easy access to government services, benefits and information. And over the long term, we will drive traffic to these portals by reducing redundant, isolated sites."
In his first budget submission to Congress in February 2002, President Bush outlined the President’s Management Agenda (PMA) for making government more accessible to citizens and more focused on results, including expanded electronic government, or E-Government, using Internet-based technology. Last September, the Labor Department was named one of four Cabinet-level departments to achieve a top score of #8220;green#8221; for E-Government on OMB’s PMA scorecard.
The Department of Labor spearheaded the development of GovBenefits.gov, a cross-departmental website listing nearly a thousand federal and state benefits programs. Last April, Secretary Law launched a new Spanish-language edition of GovBenefits.gov.
