Restoration and Preservation Projects

The Office of Administration’s Preservation Office has three objectives:

  1. Preserve the historic and architectural integrity of the landmark and older buildings used by the Executive Office of the President’s staff.
  2. Restore the historic appearance of the buildings and their significant spaces as funds and schedules permit.
  3. Increase public awareness of the history of the landmark and older buildings used by the Executive Office of the President’s staff.

As a part of these objectives, the Preservation Office acts as a curator for a number of collections. These collections for the various buildings include prints and drawings, architectural fragments, decorative art objects, and resource files of historic documents found in various repositories. The bulk of the collections specifically relate to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB). The EEOB collection includes more than 70 fine furnishings on loan from other institutions and individuals, as well as several unique items directly associated with the building, such as fireplace screens from the 1880s and artifacts like Cold War-era civil defense boxes and papers for the building from the 1960s.
