Office of the Press Secretary
January 22, 2007

Statement by the Press Secretary

The President received the report and recommendations of the Presidential Emergency Board appointed to investigate a dispute between Metro-North Railroad and the Transportation Communications International Union; Transport Workers Union of America; Sheet Metal Workers' International Association, International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; Service Employees International Union - National Conference of Firemen & Oilers; International Brotherhood of Teamsters; and Transportation Communications International Union - American Railway & Airways Supervisors Association. The President appreciates the Board's diligent work in this matter.

The President urges the parties to continue to work in good faith to resolve their dispute, taking into account the Emergency Board's recommendations. If the parties fail to reach agreement, the Railway Labor Act provides for the appointment of a second Emergency Board to address the dispute.
