Global Message

From remarks by President Bush to USAID employees and NGO presidents, 1/10/05

People and nations around the world are working to ease the suffering brought on by the devastating tsunamis.

The international community has responded with generosity and compassion, and the men and women of USAID have been at the center of the response.

Secretary of State Powell and Florida Governor Bush went to the region, and have reported that relief efforts there are well coordinated and making a difference.

USAID personnel responded the day the disaster struck. They have been working in the region day and night, 24 hours a day, and America is grateful.

USAID has delivered food, temporary shelter, hygiene kits, and supplies to help people survive, and is arranging small loans for those whose livelihoods have been destroyed.

America is improving its coordination of efforts with other governments and international non-governmental organizations.

The United States made an initial commitment of $350 million for relief efforts, and the NGOs are using some of those funds effectively to meet the needs of the people on the ground.

This project won't be completed overnight, but our focus must remain on this part of the world.

America made a long-term commitment to the affected region, and will continue to help the people there get back on their feet.
