From remarks by President Bush with King Abdullah II of Jordan, 5/6/04

Jordan and the United States are working closely to ensure that the Middle East becomes safer, more prosperous, and free.

President Bush is sorry for the humiliation suffered by the Iraqi prisoners, and the humiliation suffered by their families. He is equally sorry that people who have seen those pictures don't understand the true nature and heart of America.

Regarding the images of cruelty and humiliation suffered by Iraqi prisoners, President Bush is determined to have the wrongdoers brought to justice. Their actions do not represent America's values.

American troops are in Iraq for the security and peace and freedom of the country. The vast majority of the troops represent the very best qualities of America: courage, love of freedom, compassion, and decency.

On June 30th, a sovereign Iraqi government will take office. The United State and our coalition partners will continue to work with the United Nations to prepare for nationwide elections that will choose a new government in January of 2005.

The United States strongly supports the efforts of U.N. Secretary General's Special Advisor Brahimi to work with Iraqis to develop an interim government.

The fall of Saddam Hussein removed a source of instability and intimidation from the heart of the Middle East. All of Iraq's neighbors are safer now.
