Statement by the Deputy Press Secretary

Zalmay Khalilzad, the President's Special Envoy for Afghanistan and Special Assistant to the President for Southwest Asia, the Near East and North Africa, arrived in Afghanistan on August 10 and will stay through August 15. Dr. Khalilzad is consulting with President Karzai and senior Afghan, UN, and other officials on the situation in Afghanistan and our continuing efforts to help Afghanistan as it moves forward toward security and economic reconstruction.
