Fact Sheet
E-Business Fellowship for the Andean Region

"We will also sponsor the creation of a new Inter-American E-Business Fellowship Program. This will give young professionals from throughout the Americas the opportunity to learn about information technology by spending time with U.S. companies. And it will empower them with the skills and background to bring the benefits of these technologies to their own societies."

President George W. Bush
Summit of the Americas
April 21, 2001

  • President Bush has directed the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to partner in the development of the 2002 Inter-American E-Business Fellowship Program. Twenty Fellows will be offered the opportunity to participate in this program, which will begin in September. The Andean region has been identified as a high priority for participation in this program.

  • The program builds on the President's interest in expanding educational exchanges that help develop human capital in the hemisphere, furthering the Summit of the Americas' themes of creating prosperity and realizing human potential, and expanding the benefits of electronic commerce to the region.

  • Under the program, Fellows receive hands-on training in the use of information technologies to improve efficiency and productivity, emphasizing supply chain management and the integration of information technologies in "back office" operations.

  • The 2001 pilot program included participants from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, and Peru and represented a broad range of industries. Bell Helicopter, Caterpillar Inc, Citicorp, Comshare, Duke Energy, EDS, GE, IBM, Microsoft, Montgomery Watson, Northrop Grumman, Syneractive, and Thompson Power Systems hosted the Fellows and shared their vision of how e-business can transform business processes.
