Appointment Announcement
Statement by the Press Secretary

President George W. Bush today announced the recess appointment of Eugene Scalia to be Solicitor of the Department of Labor. The President announced the intention to nominate Mr. Scalia on April 25, 2001, and his nomination was transmitted to the Senate on April 30, 2001.

Mr. Scalia is currently a Partner at the law firm of Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher in Washington, D.C. He served as Special Assistant to U.S. Attorney General William P. Barr from 1992 to 1993, and served as Speechwriter to U.S. Education Secretary William J. Bennet from 1985 to 1987. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and received his law degree from the University of Chicago.
