President Bush to Nominate Four Individuals to Serve in His Administration

President George W. Bush today announced his intention to nominate four individuals to serve in his administration.

The President intends to nominate Roy A. Bernardi to be Assistant Secretary of Housing and Urban Development for Community Planning and Development. He is presently serving his second term as Mayor of Syracuse, New York, and previously served as City Auditor for five terms.  He is a graduate of Syracuse University.

The President intends to nominate William James Haynes to be General Counsel at the Department of Defense.  Mr. Haynes is currently a Partner at the Law Firm of Jenner & Bloch and served as General Counsel to the Department of the Army from 1990 to 1993.  Originally from Tennessee, he is a graduate of Davidson University and received his law degree from Harvard University.

The President intends to nominate Victoria Clarke to be Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs.  She is presently the General Manager of the Washington Office of Hill & Knowlton.  She served as Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Public Affairs and Private Sector Liaison from 1989 to 1992 and was Press Secretary for Senator John McCain from 1983 to 1989. She is a graduate of George Washington University.

The President intends to nominate Michael Chertoff to be Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division at the Department of Justice.  He is currently a Partner with Latham and Watkins in Newark, New Jersey.  Before joining Latham and Watkins he served for four years as the United States Attorney for New Jersey from 1990 to 1994.  He is a graduate of Harvard University and Harvard Law School.
