In the morning, President Bush met with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki at the White House. The two leaders discussed how the United States can best support the Prime Minister in improving the security situation across Iraq and partnering with the United Nations as well as discussing our ongoing partnership against terrorism and our mutual commitment to the principles of democracy.

In the afternoon, President Bush met with Minni Minawi, Sudan Liberation Movement/Army Leader. The discussion focused on how to broaden support for the Darfur Peace Agreement, facilitate its implementation, and ensure the expeditious deployment of U.N. peacekeepers to Darfur.

President Bush met with the recipients of 2005 Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers.

In the afternoon, President Bush and Iraqi Prime Minister Maliki attended lunch with military personnel and families at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.

President Bush signed of the Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, and Coretta Scott King Voting Rights Act Reauthorization and Amendments Act of 2006. The Voting Rights Act has been vital to guaranteeing the right to vote for generations of Americans. The President later met with the President of Romania.

In the afternoon, President Bush signed of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006, a bill that will ensure appropriate sentencing for sex offenders and will provide local law enforcement officials with the tools they need to track those who prey upon children. The President then made remarks to the National Association of Manufacturers before returning to the White House to participate in a photo opportunity with members of the National FFA Organization State Presidents’ Conference.

Friday, July 28, 2006
President Bush met with Prime Minister Tony Blair of the United Kingdom. The two leaders consulted on efforts to secure a lasting peace in the Middle East, consolidate democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan, prevent Iran from obtaining the means to build nuclear weapons, end the genocide in Darfur, and promote free and fair trade. Their meeting was followed by a joint press availability.

In the afternoon, President Bush participated in photo opportunities with the Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year; the top 10 American Idol finalists; and the 2006 Boys and Girls Nation delegates.
