CEQ Chairman Jim Connaughton on "Ask the White House"

April 22, 2008
Jim Connaughton, Chairman, Council on Environmental Quality

Good afternoon. Thank you for joining me as our nation celebrates Earth Day. We are already enjoying a spectacular Spring in Washington and Earth Day activities abound. Everyone can participate in efforts to conserve natural resources and protect our environment – and President Bush is committed to continuing decades of progress in making our air cleaner, our water purer, and our natural resources better protected. I look forward to answering your questions.

Good afternoon everybody. As a scuba diver, coral and marine life enthusiast, and a sometime economic and military history buff, today's topic is a particular personal pleasure to discuss! Last week, President Bush signed a proclamation to establish the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Marine National Monument. This action represents the largest single act of conservation in our nation’s history and creates the largest protected marine area in the world.

I'm glad to be back once again on Ask the White House to answer your questions about the pending Clear Skies legislation and the President's national clean air strategy. The President renewed his call for this legislation in his recent State of the Union Address, stating that four years of discussion and debate is enough.
